Official rules & guidelines – 2026

These tournament rules apply to the Western Ringette Classic. The tournament committee reserves the right to shorten games in extreme circumstances and to make final interpretations in the best interests of the tournament.

Minimum games

Each team plays a minimum of four games, excluding playoffs. The 18+B and 18+DEV divisions play three games, excluding playoffs.

Youth game format

Youth games use two 15-minute stopped-time periods and a 30-second shot clock. U10 games do not use a shot clock. Pre-game warmups are two minutes of continuous time, with no preliminary-round overtime.

Adult game format

Adult games use two 17-minute stopped-time periods and a 30-second shot clock. The 18+B and 18+DEV divisions use 15-minute periods. Pre-game warmups are two minutes of continuous time, with no preliminary-round overtime.

Timeouts & protests

Each team may use one 30-second timeout per game. No game protests will be accepted.

Penalties & suspensions

Minor penalties are two minutes and major penalties are four minutes. Match or misconduct penalties result in suspension for the remainder of the game and the next game, subject to further committee review. A player receiving 10 or more penalty minutes in one game is suspended for the next game.

Arrival & check-in

Teams should arrive at the rink one hour before their game and be ready to play 15 minutes before the scheduled start. A team manager or coach must check in with the tournament desk 60 minutes before each game.

Dressing rooms

Teams are financially responsible for dressing-room damage and should vacate the room within 20 minutes after each game.

Seven-goal differential

If a seven-goal or greater difference exists from the start of the second period, the game moves to running time. It returns to stopped time if the gap falls below seven goals. The scoreboard never shows more than a seven-goal differential.

Arena conduct

Mechanical airhorns and external speakers are prohibited in all arenas. Alcohol is permitted only in designated on-site restaurant areas.

Playoff & overtime format

Playoff periods

Youth playoff games use two 15-minute stopped-time periods. Adult playoff games use two 17-minute stopped-time periods, except 18+B and 18+DEV, which use 15-minute periods.

Overtime

A three-minute sudden-death period is played with the usual number of players. Penalties continue from regulation, and officials use a coin flip to determine initial ring possession.

Shootout

If needed, each team receives three breakaway shots. Teams then alternate shooters until there is a winner; every player must shoot before anyone shoots twice. There are no rebounds, and shooters must use continuous movement.

No overtime timeouts

There are no timeouts during overtime.

Standings & tie-breaking

Teams receive two points for a win, one point for a tie, and zero points for a loss. A team cannot be credited with more than a seven-goal differential.

  1. Step 1

If one tied team has beaten all other tied teams in every game played between them, rank that team highest.

  2. Step 2

If tied teams have not played each other equally, proceed directly to Step 7.

  3. Step 3

Rank by wins in games between the tied teams.

  4. Step 4

Rank by plus/minus in games between the tied teams.

  5. Step 5

  10. Step 10

Rank by most goals for in games between all teams.

  11. Step 11

Rank by least fully served penalty minutes in all games.

  12. Step 12

Rank by least penalty minutes in games between tied teams.

  13. Step 13

Rank by least penalty minutes in games between all teams.

  14. Step 14

If still tied, a coin toss or draw from a hat may be used.

Player eligibility & rosters

All eligible players must be entered on the first-game score sheet with a unique jersey number. Teams must enter a final official game roster in CRC Stats before their first game; no additions are allowed after that. With organizer approval, an injured, sick, or unavailable goalie or player may be replaced if a team drops below 10 available skaters. A player may play for only one team in a specific age category during the tournament weekend. Players may be called up to a higher age category if the tournament is advised in advance. Playing for more than one team in the same age category disqualifies the player and forfeits the affected games.

Zero tolerance policy

Team officials are responsible for their own actions and those of their parents and players. Aggressive or abusive behaviour by a player, team official, coach, or parent may result in suspension from the remainder of the tournament and future Western Ringette Classic participation. The tournament committee has final authority to interpret, change, or alter rules in the best interests of the tournament.
